Maldonado - Punta del Este sewage system project

This infrastructure project involves all stages of the conduction, treatment and effluent disposal processes of the system.

This infrastructure project involves all stages of the conduction, treatment and effluent disposal processes of the system.

OSEThe objective of these projects is to achieve a substantial improvement in the quality of life and health of local residents (both permanent and temporary).  This will be achieved by building and operating the required infrastructure and applying sustainable management practices to protect the environment. The benefits reach beyond human health by ensuring environmental quality necessary for the development of ecosystems.  This allows for improved water quality for recreational use, thus ensuring high tourist inflows to the resort and surrounding areas with the consequent benefits (income, investment, work for permanent residents, etc.)

The planning timeframe of the project is the year 2035, providing services to a projected population of 417,000 residents. The project essentially involves the construction of:

  • an effluent treatment plant based on advanced physical-chemical treatment technology and ultraviolet disinfection in addition to anaerobic sludge digestion and mechanized dewatering centrifuges.
  • a 1,400mm diameter sewage pipe with a length of 4,200m and a 930m long underwater section, with gravity discharge of the treated effluent into the Atlantic Ocean in the Rincón del Indio area.
  • 8 pumping stations located at various points between Maldonado and Punta del Este.agua
  • 13.3 km of gravity collectors for hydraulic interconnection pumping wells and various basins of the system and 19.25 km of discharge pipe.

The investment amount is approximately USD 64 million and the execution time is approximately 36 months.

This project will be financed partly by bonds issued by OSE totaling approximately USD 20 million.
