The global pharmaceutical sector has experienced exponential growth in recent decades. Its scope has continued to expand beyond traditional manufacturing and trade to encompass a significant market for licences and patents. Although the sector covers an increasingly broad range of activities, this report focuses on pharmaceutical products for human and veterinary use—both conventional products and those incorporating biotechnology into their processes—as well as medical devices.
Uruguay’s pharmaceutical sector has also grown significantly. Although companies have been operating in the industry since the early twentieth century, their number and production have increased considerably over the past 30 years.
