Uruguay has reached a new milestone in terms of regional development and international recognition. The Manantiales Serranos Geopark—an area located in the southeast of the country, characterized by mountain ranges, waterways, and rich biodiversity—has been officially designated as a member of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network.
Effective April 15, 2026, this recognition places Manantiales Serranos on the global geotourism map, highlighting its unique geological, scenic, and cultural value. The distinction also acknowledges the coordinated efforts of public institutions, technical teams, and local communities in protecting and promoting the area.
The UNESCO Global Geoparks Network brings together areas that manage their geological heritage in an integrated manner, promoting education, conservation, and sustainable development. Within this framework, the inclusion of Manantiales Serranos represents a strategic opportunity for Uruguay, as it expands and diversifies its tourism offerings with experiences linked to nature and environmental awareness.
This recognition, which consolidates Uruguay as a leading destination for sustainable tourism and the enhancement of natural heritage, also drives public policies aimed at the responsible management of heritage and opens new opportunities for local economies through job creation, the strengthening of tourism ventures, and the promotion of local knowledge and traditions.
Manantiales Serranos thus establishes itself as a space where science, education, and tourism converge, offering a unique experience for domestic and international visitors interested in authentic and sustainable experiences.
This milestone marks the beginning of a new era for the region and for the country, with the challenge of continuing to preserve and promote a natural and cultural heritage that is now recognized on a global scale.
