Gustavo Casenave is a pianist and composer who has established himself as one of Uruguay’s most internationally recognized artists, with more than 35 albums to his credit and an extensive body of work dedicated to tango, one of the country’s defining musical genres.

Casenave won the prestigious Grammy Awards for “Best Latin Jazz Album” (as a producer) in 2023, “Best Tango Album” in 2020, and “Best Instrumental Album” in 2019, demonstrating his remarkable ability to create compositions that resonate with audiences around the world. In addition, he has been nominated six times for the Latin Grammys, including three nominations in the “Best Contemporary Classical Composition” category.

His musical prowess led to his recognition as a Steinway Artist since 2014 and the “Majestic Excellence Award 2022” at the International Excellence Piano Awards competition in Europe. He has also received the Gold Medal twice at the prestigious Global Music Awards, the inaugural “Horacio Ferrer” Award—presented by Uruguayan Vice President Beatriz Argimón—and was honored as an “Illustrious Citizen of the City of Montevideo (Uruguay)” in 2021, highlighting his profound impact on the music scene. In 2015, he was awarded the ACE Prize for his exceptional contribution to the arts.

In addition to his achievements as a performer, Casenave’s dedication to the preservation and evolution of tango is evident through his participation in nearly every major tango show in the United States over the past two decades. Furthermore, he has shared his expertise as the former director of the Jazz Department at the Harbor Conservatory for the Performing Arts and through tango master classes and lectures as a guest artist at prestigious institutions around the world, including The Juilliard School, Yale University, the Eastman School of Music, the Oberlin Conservatory, and Indiana University.
