Pharmaceutical and veterinary companies operate in Uruguay, using different business platforms: trade hubs, services hubs, production and innovation. In particular, hub activities are mostly developed in free trade zones, where they have the necessary infrastructure to provide logistics and distribution services through their user companies specialized in fractioning, conditioning, and cold storage activities.
Considering the pharmaceutical sector for human and animal use, and medical devices, the total production of the sector is estimated at US$ 660 million. This represents 12% of Uruguay's industrial GDP and 1.2% of total GDP.
With total exports amounting to US$ 258 million (including medical equipment and exports from free trade zones), the sector accounts for more than 3% of total exports in 2020.
