The Spanish law firm ECIJA disembarked in Uruguay in 2023 with a multidisciplinary team with which it completed its presence in the Rio de la Plata.

The company comprises ten professionals in Uruguay, led by Cecilia Amieva and Juan Ignacio Fraschini. It is a team with a vocation to provide full service to companies.

The new firm is a law firm with a long history in the market. It stands out for advising Uruguayan, Argentine, and foreign clients in international transactions, mergers and acquisitions, labor, tax, technology, media, and telecommunications law.

“Our eyes are on Latin America. With the arrival in Uruguay, we have expanded our regional presence, a key territory for many clients. This consolidates us as the firm of reference in Latin America and increases our value proposition to our clients,” said ECIJA managing partner Alejandro Touriño.

Visiting Uruguay for the launch, Touriño explained that the firm’s growth was always leveraged by choosing the right local partners. “It took us a while to do it in Uruguay, but we are very convinced of them,” he said.

Touriño has been practicing for more than ten years in the field of technology law, intellectual property, innovation, and entrepreneurship; he was recognized by Chambers & Partners and Legal 500 and chosen by Financial Times among the ten most innovative lawyers in Europe and by Forbes among the 100 most creative people in business (“100 most creative people in business”).

“The objective is to accompany large companies with a presence in different jurisdictions, including Uruguay, in everything they may need in the legal field. All the tax advantages, the strategic advantages offered by the country, obliged us to go hand in hand with our clients in Uruguay as well,” he added.

“Our global clients have operations in Uruguay. We work with large banks and infrastructure companies that have a very relevant presence in the country”, he explained.

ECIJA’s partner in Uruguay, Juan Ignacio Fraschini, added, “The fact that a law firm like ECIJA decides to open operations in Uruguay seems a natural step. It shares with the country the technological and development DNA of the audiovisual industry. At the same time, Uruguay is one of the most institutionally stable countries in Latin America. We wish to join the country’s strategic effort and collaborate to position it as a technological and business hub for the region and the world”.
