The Uruguayan Footprint in International Illustration
Uruguayan illustration has a diverse tradition and is recognized in various international arenas: from comics and political caricature to children’s and young adult books, as well as editorial and artistic illustration. Uruguay has produced names that have left a mark on Latin American press, the major U.S. comic industry, and the world’s most important book fairs.
Comics and Graphic Novels
Uruguayan Eduardo Barreto (1954–2011) gained worldwide recognition as an artist for DC Comics and Marvel, illustrating iconic titles such as Superman, Batman, Robin, and The Avengers. His career positions him as the Uruguayan figure with the greatest projection in the global comic industry.
Caricature and Press
Hermenegildo “Menchi” Sábat (1933–2018) became one of Latin America’s most influential political cartoonists, developing much of his career at Clarín (Argentina) and receiving international honors such as the Moors Cabot Award and the Nuevo Periodismo Iberoamericano Award. In this vein, Hogue also stands out, whose graphic humor and caricature work has crossed borders.
Children’s and Editorial Illustration
Uruguay’s presence at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair has showcased national talent in this field. The official selection of the main illustration event is highly competitive, with over 3,000 applicants each year from around the world. Uruguayan illustrators who have participated include Daniela Beracochea, Francisco Cunha, Dani Scharf, Alfredo Soderguit, Eduardo Sganga, Sabrina Pérez, Cecilia Rodríguez Oddone, Álvaro Díaz, Jorge Mato Troche, Victoria Capdepon, and Alfonso Lourido, among others, helping to position Uruguay as an emerging and increasingly influential reference in the sector.
Contemporary and Artistic Illustration
Several Uruguayan illustrators stand out nationally and internationally, projecting Uruguayan illustration into global art and design circuits. Fidel Sclavo, visual artist, illustrator, and designer, has developed a body of work that combines illustration, typography, and contemporary art, with exhibitions and publications of international reach, establishing him as one of the major figures in the regional scene. Sebastián Santana, visual artist and author, has also presented his work in prominent international venues, consolidating a bridge between illustration, art, and literature. Claudia Prezioso and Juan Manuel Díaz have participated in both national and international collective exhibitions and have received Uruguay’s National Illustration Award.
A new generation of illustrators continues to expand Uruguay’s presence in international markets and innovative projects.
