Gonzalo Varela showcased Uruguayan music for video games at Gamescom Latam 2025

Composer, sound designer, and teacher, Uruguayan Gonzalo Varela has found in video game audio a space where his passions converge: collaborative work, interactive storytelling, and the ability to move people through music.
After studying composition and guitar at the University of the Republic, a Fulbright-ANII scholarship led him to specialize at Columbia College Chicago, a world leader in screen composition. That experience marked a turning point in his career and strengthened his commitment to training new talent in Uruguay.
Today, Varela is a leader in composition, sound design, and audio implementation for video games, with credits on global titles such as Fight'N Rage, Everhood: Eternity Edition, and Neon Inferno, released on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox. His work confirms that, from Uruguay, it is possible to reach the most competitive showcases in the international industry.
In 2025, he was one of the protagonists of the national delegation at Gamescom Latam, an event coordinated by Uruguay XXI to promote the integration of Uruguayan companies and professionals into the global video game industry. There, he gave a specialized talk on composition for action and combat scenes, sharing his experience with developers, composers, and producers from different countries. His presence reaffirmed Uruguay's position as a supplier of high-level creative talent in a growing sector.
For Varela, these types of events are a unique opportunity to forge genuine links, showcase his work, and learn about the latest creative and technological trends in the industry. His career combines academic experience, technical expertise, and a versatile musical style, characteristics valued by international studios seeking original proposals with cultural identity.
Cases such as hers confirm that Uruguay has the potential to export video game music with a distinctive style, backed by a solid educational foundation, a collaborative creative ecosystem, and public policies that promote the internationalization of national talent.
