IDA 2025 Program: Uruguay Promotes 11 New Translation and Publishing Projects Worldwide
The seventh edition of the program received 32 applications from publishers in markets including Italy, the United Kingdom, France, Brazil, and Portugal

The IDA Program has announced the results of its seventh edition, confirming the growing international interest in Uruguayan literature. The initiative—led by Uruguay XXI and the Ministry of Education and Culture (MEC) through the National Institute of Letters—concluded its latest call for applications, marked by a diverse range of languages, regions, and literary genres that continue to bring Uruguayan voices to global audiences.
Since its launch in 2019, the IDA Program has supported the translation of 65 works into 12 languages, funded 11 sample translations into English, and supported the production of eight audiobooks. It has become a robust public policy instrument aimed at strengthening the internationalization of Uruguay’s publishing sector.
In this edition, the program received 32 applications from publishers across Europe, the Americas, and the Middle East. The evaluation committee selected nine full translation proposals (Line A) into languages such as Portuguese, English, Italian, and French, as well as two initiatives focused on promotion and audiobook production (Line C).
The selected projects include works by Cristina Peri Rossi, Eugenia Ladra, Pedro Peña, Regina Ramos, Mercedes Estramil, Tamara Silva Bernaschina, Lucía Franco, Leo Maslíah, Ana Laura de Giorgi, and Valentina Codevilla. Also featured is El monte de las furias (The Mountain of Furies) by Fernanda Trías, who was recently awarded the prestigious Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz Prize.
The wide range of target languages—including requests for translation into Danish, Serbian, Swedish, Albanian, Greek, Arabic, Slovenian, and Romanian—underscores the rising global demand for Uruguayan literature. This edition spans contemporary fiction, poetry, essays, and picture books. Moreover, the participation of established European publishers reflects the increasing professionalization and strategic consolidation of Uruguay’s publishing ecosystem.
Seven Editions Expanding Uruguay’s Literary Reach Worldwide
Named in tribute to poet, translator, and Cervantes Prize laureate Ida Vitale, the program is designed for foreign publishers interested in translating Uruguayan authors, as well as domestic publishers and writers seeking to promote their works internationally or produce audiobooks. Its mission is to ensure that Uruguayan literature reaches broader markets and connects with readers across diverse cultures.
The 2024 edition marked a milestone by supporting 18 projects, including 17 full translations and one audiobook.
