Uruguay strengthens its presence in Asia with the opening of a Consulate General in Hong Kong

The new consulate, which will also have jurisdiction in Macao and add a commercial office in the Greater Bay Area, will promote investment and business in the region

Uruguay took a new step in strengthening its international relations by inaugurating the Consulate General of Uruguay in Hong Kong. The new office, which also has jurisdiction in the Macao Special Administrative Region, was inaugurated by Uruguayan Foreign Minister Mario Lubetkin in a formal ceremony attended by Chinese and Uruguayan authorities.

During the ceremony, the Minister of Foreign Affairs highlighted the importance of this inauguration for ties between Uruguay and Hong Kong in the context of the comprehensive strategic alliance that unites Uruguay and China.

Cui Jianchun, Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; John Lee, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; Fernando Lugris, Ambassador of Uruguay to China; and Federico Lage, Consul General of Uruguay in Hong Kong, attended the event.

A commercial antenna in the heart of Asia

The consular office will not only assist the more than eight million inhabitants of the region but will also promote trade to attract investment and promote exports in the Greater Bay Area. This region has a population of 86 million and is consolidating its position as an important economic center.

This opening is part of Uruguay’s strategy to deepen its relationship with China and strengthen its presence in the main Asian economic centers. The inauguration of the Consulate General in Hong Kong reinforces the country’s commitment to promoting trade and bilateral cooperation.
