Former President José ‘Pepe’ Mujica passed away on May 13, 2025, at the age of 89 at his home in Rincón del Cerro, Montevideo.

The government declared national mourning on May 14, 15, and 16, with flags at half-mast in all government offices, both in the country and abroad. The wake will be open in the Salón de los Pasos Perdidos of the Legislative Palace.

Mujica’s administration (2010-2015) was marked by the promotion of progressive policies, including the legalization of same-sex marriage, the regulation of cannabis, the decriminalization of abortion, and continued support for public education.
