Wool production is a key activity for the country. For decades it was the country's main export item and was the basis of our national textile industry.
Product diversification, the conquest of new markets and investment in new technologies are some of the factors that have led the industry to position and maintain itself in this position.
In 2019, the amount exported by Uruguay represented 6% of world exports of worsted wool (tops).
The industry exports wool worsted into tops, as well as washed wool and the fat by-product of wool and lanolin; these are products with different levels of added value.
It is the 4th most important exporter of wool tops worldwide in terms of volume. Measured in value, Uruguay is also the 4th largest exporter of washed wool in the world, and 5th in terms of raw wool.
