Uruguay showcased the capabilities of its medical cannabis industry at Cannabis Fair in São Paulo, Brazil, one of Latin America’s most dynamic markets. Through a public-private delegation, the country highlighted its production, scientific, and regulatory strengths while promoting business opportunities in the region’s leading medical cannabis market.

The mission was organized by Uruguay XXI, the Canelones Municipal Government, the Institute for the Regulation and Control of Cannabis (IRCCA), and the Chamber of Medical Cannabis Companies (CECAM), with the support of the Consulate General of Uruguay in São Paulo. The delegation included Irene Tayler, Export Promotion Specialist at Uruguay XXI; Juan Carbajal, Economic Development Manager for the Canelones Municipal Government; Edelma Ros, Coordinator of the Ministry of Public Health’s Medical Cannabis Access Program and member of the IRCCA Board of Directors; and Agustín Mimbacas, President of CECAM.

The Uruguayan delegation brought together 13 companies representing different segments of the value chain, ranging from clinical research and plant genetics to the production of active pharmaceutical ingredients, medicinal derivatives, and specialized services for regulated markets. Among them, Flextem Biopharma, GreenMed, Litoral Hemp, and Extractos del Sur exhibited at their own booths, showcasing products and services tailored primarily to the Brazilian market.

Also participating were Cannabeezy, Genetics BioBanking, Grünelabs, Homeopatía Alemana, Innvita, Caillon Hamonet, Latinnabis, MILO Research, and RARAS CRO.

The delegation’s participation in the fair provided an opportunity to highlight the progress achieved by Uruguay’s medical cannabis industry more than a decade after the country implemented comprehensive cannabis regulation. Today, Uruguay’s ecosystem includes more than 100 companies and projects, supported by a stable regulatory framework and established capabilities in research, cultivation, industrial processing, and exports.

Since 2018, Uruguay has exported medical cannabis products to more than 15 international markets, positioning itself as a recognized supplier in the global industry.

The country has developed an integrated value chain that includes 15 licenses for medical cultivation, 12 licenses for industrial processing, analytical laboratories, and a logistics operator located in a free trade zone. These capabilities enable Uruguay to serve highly regulated markets and develop products that meet international pharmaceutical standards.

Brazil is a strategic market for the sector. With more than 870,000 patients and 57,000 prescribing physicians, it is currently Latin America’s largest medical cannabis market and continues to grow as access to treatments expands and the regulatory framework evolves.

In this context, Cannabis Fair served as a key platform for generating business contacts, identifying investment opportunities, and strengthening institutional ties with stakeholders across the Brazilian ecosystem. The coordinated participation of public institutions and private companies made it possible to present a national value proposition built on quality, innovation, traceability, and Uruguay’s extensive regulatory experience.
