Uruguay Ranks as the Most Peaceful Country in Latin America and the Caribbean
The country placed 43rd in the Global Peace Index, standing out for its institutional stability and low levels of conflict

Uruguay remains among the world's most peaceful countries, according to the 2026 Global Peace Index (GPI), published by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP). The country ranked 43rd out of 163 countries assessed, reinforcing its position as a regional leader in peace, stability, and security.
The report highlights that Uruguay remained the most peaceful country in Latin America and the Caribbean and the top-ranked country in South America. With a score of 1.754, it stands out for its high levels of political stability, strong institutions, and low levels of conflict. In the South American ranking, Uruguay placed ahead of Chile (52), Paraguay (64), and Argentina (72).
The Global Peace Index is widely regarded as the world's leading measure of peacefulness. The study evaluates 23 indicators grouped into three areas: Safety and Security, Ongoing Domestic and International Conflict, and Militarization. Together, the index covers 99.7% of the world's population.
The significance of these results extends beyond security. More peaceful environments tend to foster investment, economic development, and competitiveness. In this regard, institutional stability, regulatory predictability, and respect for the rule of law are strategic assets for Uruguay and factors particularly valued by companies and investors when launching new projects or expanding their operations.
While the report warns of growing geopolitical fragmentation and an increasingly uncertain international landscape, Uruguay continues to position itself as a reliable place to live, invest, and do business, backed by a track record of democratic stability and social cohesion that sets it apart in the region.
