Decanter World Wine Awards, one of the most relevant awards in the industry organized by the prestigious British magazine Decanter, awarded in its 2022 edition to Sacromonte winery from Maldonado, Uruguay with a gold medal for its tannat 2020 and a silver medal for its tannat concrete-aged.

The competition, held between April 24 and 30 in London, was attended by more than 54 countries and 300 international experts evaluated nearly 18,000 wines.

In an interview with the newspaper El Observador, the CEO and founding partner of the Fernandina winery, Edmond Borit, said: "we are very proud of this new international award and to continue on the path we have set to take Uruguayan winemaking to the top".

The history of wine in Uruguay is more than 250 years old and this is one of the reasons that have contributed to the recognition it enjoys in international markets. It is among the top four wine producers in Latin America, located between latitudes 30° and 35°, a privileged geographical location like that of the best wine producers in the world.

The tannat grape has established itself as the country's main variety due to its good adaptation to the soil and climate. Among the wine producing countries, Uruguay is identified by this unique and characteristic varietal strain, which achieves a wine of elegant intensity and character.
