On May 20, Uruguay observed Human Rights Day at its national pavilion—marking the first time this commemoration took place at a world exposition. The day paid homage to those who were detained and disappeared during Uruguay’s last civil-military dictatorship (1973–1985), reaffirming the country’s ongoing commitment to truth, memory, justice, and the full realization of human rights.

The program included cultural and audiovisual activities designed to underscore the importance of preserving historical memory. Attendees viewed a special video by TV Ciudad, the Montevideo City Council’s media channel, focused on the Marchas del Silencio (Marches of Silence), which will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2025. Another video by the Michelini Foundation reinforced Uruguay’s dedication to defending human rights.

A special edition of the documentary DF Destino Final (2008), produced by Taxi Films and directed by Mateo Gutiérrez and Virginia Plottier, was also screened. The film explores the significance of May 20 within the Uruguayan context. The video 197 Illustrated Stories was presented as well—a project that honors the lives of those who were detained and disappeared through illustrated narratives highlighting their neighborhoods, hobbies, and family and community ties. The screenings concluded with an animated video by the National Institute of Human Rights (INDDHH), showcasing its mission and work in Uruguay.

As a symbolic gesture of remembrance and hope, all attendees received daisies—a flower representing tribute to the disappeared. Visitors to the Uruguay pavilion could also scan a QR code at the front desk to access the INDDHH website for more information.

The pavilions of San Marino and Panama, neighbors of the Uruguay pavilion, joined the initiative, along with the pavilions of Paraguay and the United Nations.

Uruguay’s participation in Expo Osaka 2025 reflects its commitment to promoting cultural and human values on the global stage. The Uruguay pavilion—officially inaugurated on April 14—is an 80-square-meter space that highlights the nation’s key strengths through a concept centered on innovation, sustainability, and interactive design. Constructed with eco-friendly materials such as reclaimed wood and natural plants, the space offers an immersive experience that connects visitors to every element of its layout.

The pavilion also includes meeting rooms, dynamic screens, and areas dedicated to promoting investment, exports, and Uruguay’s national sustainability strategy. It features a curated selection of Uruguayan products—such as high-quality wool garments—which consistently capture the attention of visitors.

The Universal Exposition, held every five years in different countries, is expected to attract over 30 million visitors throughout its six-month duration. Uruguay’s involvement in this global event reflects more than a century of bilateral cooperation with Japan and strengthens its diplomatic and cultural ties with the host nation.

To date, over four million people have visited Expo Osaka, with 350,000 stopping by the pavilion where Uruguay’s stand is located.

This commemoration at the Uruguay pavilion offered a meaningful opportunity for dialogue and reflection, reaffirming the country's enduring commitment to human rights in an international forum of global significance.
